Psychomotor Therapy.
Program developed at José María Vargas Hospital. Pediatric Services. Caracas, Venezuela.

María de los Angeles Hernández Torres, 20 juli 2001

The Psychomotor Therapy Program has been developed by me at José María Vargas Hospital since 1998.

This program is aimed at children from 0 months till 12 years. These children have been referred here by Pediatric and Neuropediatrics Doctors, on the basis of psychomotor problems and diagnosis of AHDT.
At the hospital I designed an area for different aspects of the program:

1.- THE DIAGNOSIS: the goal is to create a psychomotor test, in which I observe the psychomotor develop, psychomotor expression and the behavior in free games. For the children with AHDT I have used a Vítor Da Fonseca Test.

2.- THE THERAPY: the goal of this is to create a therapy in which the purpose is to work with the faculty or power psychomotor, in order to evolve new psychomotor patterns.
The therapy takes into account the needs of each child. For this I make a collage using different point of view, in order to create a routine using different authors like Bernard Aucouturier, Andre Lapierre (France), Vítor da Fonseca (Portugal), Esteban Levin (Argentina), and others.
At this point I try to get the parents involved to make them participate in the therapy for being also multiplying.

3.- THE PREVENTION: the goal is to detect cause of the psychomotor or emotional problem in families in low social cultural environments (the hospital located in this area) or in specific age of development.

In this country, I don´t know any one else that works in this area, and there isn´t any specific University Course .
In Venezuela the Psychomotor area is only evaluated and developed at the kindergarten and the only goal is the development of motor skills. Often the teachers do not know the difficulties and skills of evolve.

At the moment in Caracas, this psychomotor therapy has developed in two directions:

1.- In the Educational area: here it was planned as a course by the teacher Evelyn Torres, at the Metropolitana University, where I gave an informative course of Prevention and Education in Practical Psychomotor Therapy. I gave this course at the beginning of the year, and now it is going to be given again in June.

2.- At the Therapy area: I teach at the University Central of Venezuela, for the Occupational Therapy, and I give a course of 30 hours.

If you need more information, please ask me what you want to know.
Yours.
María
